Research

This research provides new understanding and new knowledge of how the costume designer can embody and share an understanding of performance through the act of drawing, and how the designer can use this understanding to collaboratively create performance with the performer.

Using four ethnographic case studies in performance, costume design and the sport of figure skating this research examines how the physical act of drawing can provide the costume designer with an embodied understanding of performance. This examination of the physicality and structure of the costume designer’s drawing process responds to the absence of investigations of embodied forms of knowledge acquisition in the field of costume design.
